What Is Midjourney AI and How Does It Work?

Midjourney is an independent research lab’s AI that turns text descriptions into images. You describe what you want in words—the bot (on Discord or the Midjourney website) returns unique images in seconds. In that sense it’s similar to DALL·E (OpenAI) and Stable Diffusion, but with a strong focus on artistic and stylistic quality.

What Is Midjourney AI?

Midjourney is a text-to-image tool: you give it a prompt (a short description), and it generates one or more images. The team is led by David Holz (co-founder of Leap Motion). Right now you can use it in two ways:

  • Discord — Join the official Midjourney Discord and use the bot in channels or in Direct Messages. Type /imagine and your prompt to generate images.
  • Web — Sign up at midjourney.com and create images directly in the browser.

There is no free tier anymore; you need a paid subscription (from about $8/month) to generate. Plans differ by how many images you can make and whether you get features like Stealth Mode (so your images aren’t shown on the public gallery).

How Does Midjourney Work? Quick Tutorial

  1. Sign up — Go to midjourney.com and create an account. You’ll be guided to Discord or the web app.
  2. Subscribe — Choose a plan (Basic, Standard, Pro, or Mega) so you can run jobs.
  3. Write a prompt — In Discord, type /imagine and then your description, e.g. “a sunset over mountains, oil painting style”. On the website, use the create box the same way.
  4. Get results — The bot returns four preview images. You can upscale the ones you like, vary them, or remix with a new prompt.

Important: by default, Midjourney can show your images and prompts to other users and allow remixes. If you need privacy, use Stealth Mode on Pro or Mega, or generate in a private Discord server.

Key Commands and Parameters

  • /imagine — Main command: type your prompt after it.
  • /describe — Upload an image and get prompt ideas from it.
  • --ar 16:9 — Set aspect ratio (e.g. 16:9, 3:2).
  • --s — Stylization (how “artistic” the output is).
  • --chaos — More variation between the four results.

For a full list, see the Midjourney Parameter List and Discord Command List in the official docs.

Pros and Cons

Pros: Fast, high visual quality, strong style control, easy to start with Discord or web. Great for concept art, mood boards, and creative exploration.

Cons: Paid only; generated images can be used and remixed by others unless you use Stealth; you can’t edit the image inside Midjourney (you regenerate or use other tools).

Is This the End of Creativity?

No. Tools like Midjourney make it easier to get a first visual, but what you ask for—the idea, the composition, the style—still comes from you. Prompting well and getting the image you want often takes practice and iteration. For brands and precise visuals, many studios still combine AI with classic CGI and design, as Danthree Studio describes in their CGI vs. generative AI articles.
