title: “Midjourney Parameters and Pro Tips – Get the Result You Want” description: “Master Midjourney parameters (—ar, —s, —chaos, —no, —q) and workflow tips: multi-prompts, weights, and when to use Describe or style reference.” pubDate: 2025-03-16 image: “https://picsum.photos/seed/mj-params/1200/630

Parameters control aspect ratio, stylization, variety, and quality in Midjourney. This guide sums up the most useful ones and how to use them in real prompts.

👉 Use Midjourney

Core parameters (put at the end of your prompt)

ParameterShortWhat it doesExample
Aspect ratio--arWidth : height (default square)--ar 16:9
Stylize--sHow much the model “interprets” your prompt (more artistic)--s 100 or --s 250
Chaos--cVariation between the 4 grids (0–100)--chaos 30
No--noThings you don’t want in the image--no text, watermark
Quality--qGPU time / detail (not resolution)--q 1 or --q 2

Example:

a mountain cabin at dusk, smoke from chimney --ar 16:9 --s 150 --no text

Aspect ratio (—ar)

  • 16:9 – Landscape, wallpaper, video thumbnails
  • 3:2 – Photo-like
  • 1:1 – Default square
  • 9:16 – Portrait, stories

Use one --ar per prompt; it applies to the whole image.

Stylize (—s)

  • Lower (e.g. 50) – Closer to your literal description.
  • Higher (e.g. 200–300) – More stylized and “artistic”.

If the result is too far from your idea, try lowering --s.

Chaos (—chaos)

  • 0 – Four images are quite similar.
  • 30–50 – Noticeable variation.
  • 80–100 – Very different options each time.

Useful when you want several distinct ideas from one prompt.

What to exclude (—no)

Add --no plus comma-separated words for things you don’t want, e.g.:

  • --no text
  • --no watermark, signature
  • --no blurry, distorted hands

Multi-prompts and weights

Split the prompt with :: and optionally add a weight (number) so the model emphasizes one part:

forest :: river :: moonlight :: 0.5

Weights are advanced; start with simple :: splits and then try numbers if you need more control.

When to use other tools

  • Describe – You have an image and want prompt ideas. Use /describe and then refine one of the suggestions.
  • Style reference (—sref) – You want the look of another image (mood, colors, style).
  • Image prompt – You want to mix your photo with text; put the image URL in the prompt.

Pro tips

  1. One main idea per prompt – One subject + one style + one or two parameters often works better than long lists.
  2. Iterate – Use U1–U4 to upscale, V1–V4 to vary; then adjust the text and run again.
  3. Save good prompts – Keep a note of prompts (and parameters) that work so you can reuse and tweak them.
